1. Historical context of international communication
The chapter I'm about to discuss is called " The Historical context of international communication" taken from International communication: continuity and change by Thussu, D. K.
In order to introduce the material, I'll start with a brief summary then provide a personal critique about one aspect of the essay that has grabbed my attention.
First, the chapter does represents global communication from its beginnings when thanks to many means of communication such as the telegraph and the newspapers have tied many useful links at the worldwide level and that's how the information was travelling faster with the time and this is also how the world was and is still becoming more connected.
A long time ago from now, especially at war time, media was progressing at the same time as the historical events such as world war two. It’s been way through which the societies were directly or indirectly linked and aware of each other’s news.
In the chapter, the writer also tackles some names of important communication agencies that have existed since a long time and discusses the impact those agencies had on the communication at a global level.
Later in the chapter, the writer becomes more specific when it comes to listing and discussing the different media in a sense that the history was linked to politics and the economics in order to have a well-structured analytical text.
As if he/she’s traveling through time in his/her essay, the writer talks about the rise and progress of the media and communication tools discussed in the chapter in a way that he/she goes forward until arriving to the new technologies and the high globalization we experience nowadays.
I’d like to cease the opportunity in order to talk about one aspect of the essay that has grabbed my attention which is when the writer was talking about “The era of news agencies”.
At some point he/she evokes the fact that communication agencies were “looking beyond the continent” in the goal of being open to the rest of the world and building new relations with other countries. This aspect has a positive note in the essay because it shows how optimistic and open the communication people were at that time and I think that thanks to this openness that the world is highly globalized as if all the countries were reunited though language, social media, television …
