10. International Communication in The Internet Age

This chapter tackles the different factors that contributed to the rise of the new age which is the age of the internet. Indeed, this technological shift wasn’t without consequences and it has definitely played a huge role in the changes that came afterwards on the socio-economic level. Since it’s network-based, this new phenomenon of the internet has been spread all over the world within a short period of time. This way of making the internet worldwide had a great impact on the world on many levels. In fact, much old media started literally disappearing in proportion with the advancement of the technologies and internet. Many new brand technologies were introduced to the market and everyone from all over the world started being involved in the sphere. Intercultural communication and business communication were the two sectors that have been influenced by the introduction of internet across the world. The different kinds of software that were present in the platform were very helpful...

9. Global Media Bazaar (Part 2)

Decades later, communication was mainly used for war and later, trade purposes but nowadays, we notice that communication and media are mainly here to influence people, reshape their ideas, commercialize their goods and homogenize the communities into one huge society that consumes and produces the same kind of content because, psychologically speaking, it’s more assuring to have the same big group’s culture than being different or authentic. While numerous industries are based in the Western World, it’s still reaching the developing countries and making them influenced by their internal culture and traditions. Disney World is one of the most obvious examples of this theory. Since media became more a space for commercialization and entertainment, the big companies that rely on the modernity approach are working on making their businesses more developed so they can reach more and more audience across the globe. They seek not only to influence the communities in one level or one aspe...

8. Media Contraflows

One of these days most trendy and important factors that have been involved in the globalization of media is the influence of the Western world over developing countries'. Indeed, the influence of the dominant countries has played a major role in shaping the structure of the flow of news circulating in different media and also created new shapes of media content due to the mix of different cultures and backgrounds.   First, we have to mention that the medium that has played a major role in the rapid production and the mixture of cultures in the world of media is television. Indeed, as the television got rid of many restrictions (political and socio-cultural), people have started shaping a new identity through the content shown on their screen. The very numerous programs and choice of channel options provided are the main elements that encourage people (in the developing countries) to be aware of what’s happening (on the national and the international level as well) hence, it...

7. Global Media Bazaar - The Global & Local in Media Cultures

Throughout this chapter entitled Global Media Bazaar- The Global & Local Media Cultures , Thussu discusses the idea of the control of some countries (mostly Western) over other countries (mostly Eastern) concerning media industry on numerous levels and through different ways. First, we have to know that the control does not only concern a specific area. In fact, this monopoly is polyvalent and aims to influence different fields such as the entertainment which includes TV shows, films and other content meant to provide the society with enjoyment. Adding to that, the control also tackles informational media content such as the news. Since there are numerous foreign news agencies that are adapted to different cultures from the countries they target, the news are highly influenced by a minority and not too many decide what to include in the content hence, a very narrow perspective on the global news and the minds are implicitly shaped and guided to the same direction. Moreover, the...

6. About term paper

Image
Since my paper is about Djerba in Tunisia and the differences between the Muslim cultural traditions and the Jewish ones, I've collected (so far) these five books in order to start drafting for a former outline to base my ideas and axes on. Here are the books I've chosen this morning: 1. Tunisia, the rough guide 2. A history of Modern Tunisia - Kennith J. Perkins 3. Jews & Judaism in African History - Richard Hull 4. Religion or Ethnicity Jewish identities in Evolution - Zvi Gitelman 5. The Tunisia of Ahmad Bey - L.Carl Brown (The brown book on the picture) I'm willing to do a deeper research in the database of the library so I can find more papers and e-sources in order to have a stronger research process and a more academic lead one. More detailed and properly cited sources will be provided in the coming days ...

5. Workshop 10/04/2017

Image
On Wednesday 4 th of October 2017 , our International Communication professor Mrs.Afifa El Bayed has asked us to attend a workshop session in order to teach the lesson differently that day. At the beginning of the workshop, there was a Moroccan journalist named Driss Ksiskes  who welcomed us by introducing himself and the activity we’ll be doing for the next hour and half. The workshop has started with an activity based on a very specific and challenging way of communication. There were two exercises: The first one was mainly about communicating in few words with meaningful thoughts and some gestures associated with the script. The reactions were supposed to be based on four values which are: “Desire, Emotion, Reason and Memory” as Mr.Ksikes has explained. My teammate was a friend of mine called Aymane Sahli. At the beginning, we didn’t understand the exercise but then, the guest speaker re-explained with more simple words. Personally, I was inspired by the professor when ...

4. Creating a global communication infrastructure

This week’s chapter is called “creating a global communication infrastructure”. Since the beginning of the chapter, two terms are highly important in order to understand the material: liberalization and privatization of the international communication. First, let’s start with the “privatization of the international communication sector” (Thussu 67) . In the chapter, Thussu defines it as a “telecommunication company that goes from public to private”. It’s not the government who controls its communication or economic movements anymore, it’s a particular person or a group of people who own it and manages its activities. Indeed, this action of privatization is made in order to achieve specific goals vis-à-vis the societies and the particular all over the world. Amongst these goals, we can cite: “enforcing the international trade agreements, remove hindrances hence increase income and growth” (Thussu 68). The agreements were set in order to regularize the trade across the borders be...
